To cope with surging demand, Outschool is hoping to hire an extra 5000 online teachers by the end of next week
Demand for access to Outschool’s platform and online teachers has surged in recent weeks, due to the impact of Covid-19 and school closures. It has reported an 11x increase in enrolments and its current pool of 1000 online teachers require support to share the burgeoning workload.
Through video conferencing using Zoom, enrolled students can choose from over 10,000 classes to follow live lessons in various subjects, including maths, art, languages, science and music. The price of classes typically ranges from $10 to $5.
Online teachers can expect to earn around $40 per hour. Outreach aims to attract teachers to the platform through four ket statements:
- Flexible working hours
- Opportunity to create a curriculum
- No bureaucracy
- Opportunity to teach motivated students
The website includes examples of Outschool in action and interviews with online teachers.
“ Families, now, are suddenly faced with a scenario, where they’re trying to work from home, adjust their lives, but also keep their kids occupied in a way that keeps them in touch with their learning… When we saw the announcements start to happen of mass school closures across the U.S, there was just this massive spike in enrollments in classes. That is still going on…” Amir Nathoo, Co-Founder and CEO of Outschool
Earlier in the month Outschool started a fundraising program to enable it to offer free live lessons to families affected by school closures. On the 14th of March it reported that it had raised $150K and that it would match this amount to create a total budget of $300K, so it can continue offering free live lessons to the general public and accept new enrollments.
Examples of popular classes include:
- Stop Frame Animation
- Multiplication
- Video Game Design
- Spanish
- Writing for High School Students
