Day 03 – Appvent23 – Brisk Teaching
Day 03 - Appvent23

Welcome to day three of the 2023 Appvent calendar where today we will focus on a handy AI tool called Brisk Teaching.

With the furore around the usefulness of AI within EdTech, this year’s Appvent calendar focuses on our #24DaysOfAI event – for all the conversations and shares on the calendar, please do check out the hashtag on LinkedIn and X/Twitter.

Brisk Teaching Day Three Reveal

Our AI tool of the day:

Today’s tool is… Brisk!  Brisk Teaching is a fab little free AI Chrome extension that integrates into tools such as Google Docs, Classroom, Canvas, and Schoology, among others. You can also use it on any webpage to change its reading level, you can use it in Google Docs to create curriculum content or generate feedback.

Educational Benefits:

Brisk has several educational benefits, but one of our favourites is its ability to assess the reading level of any text. To do so, simply click on the Brisk extension. It uses the length of sentences and the vocabulary used in the text to work out what age level the text is suited to. Teachers can easily use the tool to convert text to a level that matches the needs, or challenges required, of students easily, by converting the article and adding it straight into a new Google Doc for you which you can then easily share with your students. You can even use Brisk to generate extra materials such as reading comprehension quizzes.

Practical Application:

Creating an account with Brisk is simple and it offers some free features, albeit they are limited, such as feedback, lexile conversion, and curriculum tools. If you opt for a paid plan then you get additional features such as rubric generation, progress reports, and data analytics, among others.

Considerations and Tips:

Remember that the free features are limited, i.e. the number of times you can use them is limited. We’d recommend trialling extensively before any purchases and of course, undertaking due diligence to ensure that the tool meets the data protection requirements of your school, local authority/district/government.
