A group of law students are hoping to advance the success of home learning in the Philippines.   They recently launched Project Wifi, a community based initiative, with the aim of offering free wifi to students.  The eligibility criteria principally involves proving that the student attends a school which currently offers online learning resources.  The deadline for applications is the 10th June and sponsors are requested to donate either ₱3,999 to fund internet access for one semester or ₱999 to cover the cost of internet hardware.

To date the initiative has managed to collect ₱20,398.00.  A total of 50 students will receive sponsorship in the first semester and names will be released on June 15th.  Applications are open to students from preschool all the way through to college level.

“ It’s our own personal struggles as Law students that inspired us to promote this project…Knowing our first-hand struggles with connecting to the internet, we realized we wanted to adopt scholars from our own personal funds at the start to enable them to continue access to the education through the internet. ” Peachy Garcia, Co-Founder, Project Wifi

The founders launched Project Wifi after experiencing personal difficulties accessing course materials using mobile data.  They recognised that many families lost income as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and were unable to pay for wifi access.  Long term the founders are hoping to be able to provide laptops and iPads to deprived families.

“ We are appealing to the hearts of our kind donors. The applicants are students from the provinces, some are working students at a very young age. ” Peachy Garcia, Co-Founder, Project Wifi
