On Day 23, The Penultimate Day Of #24DaysOfAI, We Share A #GenerativeAI Tool On The #Appvent Calendar Worth Exploring For A Variety Of Reasons. Read On To Learn More…
Welcome to the penultimate day of the 2023 Appvent calendar where today we will focus on Perplexity.
AI tool of the day:
Perplexity AI is a conversational AI tool similar to ChatGPT, which uses natural language processing and is also built upon GPT-4. Whilst both have similar origins, Perplexity differs from ChatGPT in a variety of ways, such as its user interactions and interfaces where it attempts to engage in interactive dialogues with users. It focuses on understanding and responding to queries contextually, offering nuanced answers. This approach is particularly beneficial for interactive learning and information exploration, which sets it apart from ChatGPT and more traditional search engines which they aim to provide to give a more user-centric and adaptive experience.
Educational Benefits:
Perplexity is a great tool for promoting academic honesty in educational institutions as the inclusion of sources provides an opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge of topics, should your school choose to provide Perplexity as an option approved by the school.
Practical Application:
Joining Perplexity is an easy process and simply requires an email address. Once signed in, you are greeted with a Where Knowledge Begins screen. Much like a traditional search engine, you can enter your query and Perplexity will then provide an up-to-date answer with clickable links.
Like other Generative AI tools like this, you can continue the conversation by posing follow-up questions.
Considerations and Tips:
Perplexity also offers a Copilot solution which could be used as part of academic research. Copilot aims to assist in solving more complicated problems and help guide you towards a solution. It requires Perplexity Pro to access it and pricing details are available on the Perplexity homepage.
As is the case for all AI tools, any generated content should be checked for bias and accuracy.
If you are planning to use Perplexity in your setting it is important to discuss this with your data protection officer and as always, if you’re thinking about using Perplexity to interrogate sensitive information, make sure it has been anonymised first.
