AI tool of the day: Descript

Descript is a powerful video editor that integrates Ai capabilities making it really easy for teachers, instructors, or lecturers to quickly create and edit videos that can be shared with students or parents.

Before releasing Underlord, Descript was already a popular video editor in the video-editing community.  However, the release of Underlord has been a real game changer and makes a lot of the tedious and time-consuming work involved in video editing so much easier!

Educational Benefits:

It’s no secret that many instructors spend hours upon hours producing educational video content for students, teachers, and possibly parents. Of course, asynchronous learning incorporating video content has huge benefits, but the time involved in creating content is often significant.  Enter Descript Underlord…

Descript Underlord can simplify the entire video-making process through the use of AI-powered tools.  The great thing about Underlord is how it complements the traditional editing process rather than replacing it entirely which is great for keeping authenticity.

So, time-saving and workload reduction are the key benefits here.  For teachers who are fed up with creating endless videos, this tool will undoubtedly inject some fun back into the process.

Practical Application:

When creating a video Underlord can assist you right from the outset by helping you to draft an outline or even brainstorm new ideas.  There is an option to draft an entire script as can be seen in the picture below.

In terms of the actual video, you can either record directly within Descript, upload an existing video, or even paste a YouTube link.  Then once again a selection of fab Ai tools can help you take your video to the next level without spending hours making tweaks.  For example, you can Edit for clarity which automatically removes filler words and digressions.

A couple of other AI-powered tools that deserve a mention are:

Look Good: If you were not looking at the camera when recording, this tool can correct that!  Another choice is to apply a background using a green screen-style effect.

Repurpose: You can generate short-form videos if desirable and depending on your subscription you may be able to have your transcript automatically translated into another language.

This video provides a great overview of all the tools just mentioned and a few others!

Considerations and Tips:

Whilst you can test Descript for free (5 uses of Ai included) you will need a paid package to make the most of the various tools.  Having explored the test account, Hobbyist or Creator are the best options for making the best use of the platform.  Full pricing and options are available via the Descript website, though as a teacher you are eligible for a discount via this link.

As is the case for all AI tools, teachers and students are encouraged to check responses for bias and accuracy.  You should also consult your school’s data protection officer to ensure compliance when using Ai tools.
